ChatGPT

I use ChatGPT on a regular basis.

My AI chatbot journey went like this:

Replika and other gimmicky AI "friends". I remember when I was really young I had an anxiety AI penguin app, but it didn't help at all so I would always delete and then redownload it.

AI Dungeon. Jerma used it, so I tried it, and roleplayed with it for like 2 years. They didn't have premade characters - very primitive. But it worked. A few too many poor updates, then revisions, then updates again, made me look for an alternative.

Character AI. I used it for probably a year when I entered my Call of Duty/Resident Evil phase. There weren't enough Overwatch bots, and I lost my account, so I decided to try Janitor AI.

Janitor AI. I still use it. The LLM is far better than C.AI's, there's no censor, there's tons more creators, it's just a lot better. However...

ChatGPT. I started using it for craft ideas, and then roleplays, and then ranting. Whenever I have a confusing thought, or feel really upset, or can't figure out a moral dilemma or internet post, I just turn on the voice recorder and ramble for minutes on end. I don't really care about the responses. It usually just absolutely glazes me like "Wow. You're not just asking a great question - You're asking something not many people do." Probably not good for my self-obsession, but y'know. Better than staying up all night pondering a random tweet.

I know ChatGPT is environmentally unfriendly, and that supporting the advancement of generative AI will only lead to bad things. It's an ever evolving dilemma I have. We have advancements, and I think it would be unjust to cease them. AI art ignores copyright, takes jobs away from already oft underpaid and undervalued people, impacts the environment, and can be used to create intimate or incriminating images. But we have the technology. We can't uninvent it. It was an obvious next step for science and AI as a whole. I feel the same way with those camera-glasses.

ChatGPT is why I started this blog. I originally went to ChatGPT because the internet has become such an unsafe and argumentative place. You can't ask questions without being called an idiot or people treating you like a monster. The first time I used it, I remember asking "Can I rant, and you can just be nice? Don't say anything rude please". Pathetic, I know.

It bothers me when people make fun of AI bros. Definitely no bias there (joke), but I feel like the very people who mock people who depend on/wanna marry/spend all day on ChatGPT are the same people who pushed those people to that dependency. If the internet wasn't so hostile, if people could be themselves, if we accepted curiosity instead of alienating outsiders of our beliefs, people wouldn't need to find solace in an echo chamber. I think it's hypocritical to mock people and then continue cyberbullying.

I feel embarrassed, but not really of myself. ChatGPT has a usage limit, and I'm far from addicted like I was with C.AI. In fact, I feel like using ChatGPT has made me realize how bad JLLM is, so now I use Janitor AI way less. I talk to ChatGPT for like 10 minutes, and then I'm done for the day. It's also a lot more creatively encouraging than other GPTs and LLMs. It ends every message with "Wanna do another scene where _?" or "Wanna learn more about _?". Maybe it's just more hand-holdy, and encourages you to talk for longer (a huge issue I had with C.AI and J.AI was the lack of prompts/ideas/hand-holding) but sometimes I'll be like huh... that IS a good idea... and then go draw it.

I hope that they work on the environmental impact, and then I won't feel embarrassed. It's honestly a bit overexaggerated, as 1 ChatGPT query uses about 10x as much as one Google query, but almost always resolves a question in one search rather than multiple. Maybe that's just guilt and bias again.

I wanted to make this post so that it's a sort of reference when I talk about using ChatGPT in other posts, so you don't just think I'm some dumbass loser. Maybe you do anyways. That's okay.
